Connecting multiple circuits

Postby marchi86 on Tue Apr 14, 2009 9:47 pm

Hi,
I'm new to this forum. Can anyone please help in indicating whether the DMX driver circuit can be used and connected with other DMX driver circuits in a daisy chain, since I cannot see a TX out for a 3pin xlr. Can anyone indicate what modifications need to be carried out to the circuit if possible.
Thanks

Obviously there is no TX out because it's only a three pin connector.

If you want to daisy chain them togther then you have to wire two 3-pin XLR connectors together as shown. Wire them in a 'V' (like the picture shows) rather than a 'T'
I deliberately left the connector off the PCB because there are lots of variants for the XLR connector, I don't think the 3-pin XLR is even an 'official' DMX512 connector despite being very common. Google will turn up more information on connector types and pinouts.

I would just like to point out as someone who works in the entertainment lighting industry, that the use of the 3 pin DMX connector is rather frowned upon and is becoming more problematic as in the latest implementation of the DMX standard much more use is made of the extra 2 pins in the 5 pin XLR connector.

Also the 3 pin XLRs are easily confused with the audio cables used for microphones etc.

The DMX standard has always specified the use of a 5 pin XLR connector.

While that may be the case 3-pin is still very popular and a lot of (current) commercially made DMX stuff is still using 3-pin XLR. Both the Velleman USB interface and the Skytronic DMX controller I bought to test and develop the controller with are fitted with 3-pin XLR.

I deliberately didn't fit the DMX connector to the PCB to allow the end user to choose their preferred connector type. The Picprojects web page for the DMX driver also makes the point you have made about 3/5 pin XLR.

My reply to the original post provides the information requested, wiring for 3-pin XLR
