SMDs getting hot

Postby ronniek on Tue Oct 20, 2009 7:49 pm

Hey Pete,

After installing the SMDs and PIC, I turned on the +5 DCV and not the led does not come on and the SMDs get real hot. What should I check now?

Thanks

If the green power LED doens't turn on, and it's fitted the correct way round it sounds like the power supply.

Is the 5 volt power supply a DC supply?
Is it regulated power supply?
Have you checked with a voltmeter to make sure that the polarity of the 5 volt supply to the board is the correct way round?
And also when connected to the board that there is still 5 volts present?

If the 5 volts supply is low when connected to the board, check if there is a short on the board, or has one or both of the CAT4016 have been soldered to the board the wrong way round / solder bridges between pins etc.

Hey Pete,

Thanks, i got my +5 volts backwards due to coming off a old power supply from a computer that i took out some time ago. Everything is working really good now.

I had trouble logging in to let you know of this because i forgot my password and getting locked out.

Thanks for all the help. Everything is working good.
